Recycling plastic factory

Pramia Plastic Oy is building a recycled plastic factory in Kurikka, Ilvesjoki

The new factory being built in Kurikka will produce high-quality recycled plastic from deposit plastic bottles, which can be used to produce completely new plastic bottles made from 100% recycled plastic.

Factory project is a significant step in the development of the Finnish circular economy industry and strengthens the Pramia Group’s position as a trendsetter in the industry. Pramia Plastic Oy will begin construction of a new recycled plastic factory in Ilvesjoki, Kurikka, during the spring of 2025.

Founded in 2012, Pramia Plastic has so far operated in Central Ostrobothnia, Toholampi, and the move to Ilvesjoki will bring it closer to its parent company Pramia Oy, which has operated for 35 years. The total area of the new factory is 9,800 m² and its estimated total investment is approximately 15 million euros.

The factory has been designed with both production capacity and environmental friendliness in mind. Daily capacity will increase to up to 2 million bottles per day. The production lines will be equipped with the latest technology in the industry, and the factory will operate completely without a chimney – a concrete example of abandoning fossil processes. In addition, the factory will treat its own wastewater in a closed loop using its own wastewater treatment plant, which will not produce any wastewater.

The energy solutions are also advanced. The old wind turbine on the factory site will be replaced with a new 1 MWh unit, which will cover almost half of the factory’s electricity consumption. A sand battery system will be used for heat storage, which supports the factory’s energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy.

Pramia Plastic Oy’s CEO Marko Mäkinen is acting as an advisor in construction and process design to his son Tero Mäkinen, who is Pramia Oy’s CEO and is leading the project on behalf of the parent company. “It’s great to be able to continue the family business in such a concrete way and at the same time build future recycling solutions in Kurikka,” says Tero Mäkinen. Pramia Plastic has also taken care of its personnel in connection with the change. All Toholammi employees have been made an attractive job offer to continue in their positions in Ilvesjoki. The aim is to start construction work in spring 2025, and the factory is expected to be ready for production in 2026.

Up to 80 percent of Pramia Plastic’s production is exported to the EU, making the company a significant Finnish recycling export company.
