Pramia Plastic Oy to build a state-of-the-art plastic recycling plant in Ilvesjoki, Kurikka

The new facility in Kurikka will manufacture high-quality recycled plastic from deposit-return PET bottles. This recycled material can be used to produce brand-new plastic bottles made from 100% recycled plastic. The project marks a significant step in the development of the Finnish circular
economy and strengthens the Pramia Group’s position as an industry leader.

Pramia Plastic Oy will begin construction of a new plastic recycling plant in Ilvesjoki, Kurikka, during the spring of 2025. Since its founding in 2012, Pramia Plastic has operated in Toholampi, Central Ostrobothnia. The relocation to Ilvesjoki brings it closer to its parent company, Pramia Oy,
which has operated in the area for 35 years. The new plant will have a total floor area of 9,800 m², and the total investment is estimated at 15 million euros.

The design of the facility focuses on both production capacity and environmental sustainability. The plant will be capable of processing up to 2 million bottles per day. It will feature cutting-edge technology and operate entirely without a smokestack- concretely illustrating the shift away from fossil-based processes. Additionally, the factory will treat all wastewater in-house with a closed-loop treatment system, resulting in zero wastewater discharge.

Energy solutions are equally forward-looking. An old wind turbine on the site will be replaced with a new 1 MWh wind turbine, which will cover nearly half of the plant’s electricity needs. A sand battery system will be used for heat storage, supporting energy efficiency and the use of renewable
energy.

Marko Mäkinen, CEO of Pramia Plastic Oy, will act as an advisor in the design and construction process for his son, Tero Mäkinen, CEO of Pramia Oy, who is overseeing the project on behalf of the parent company. “It’s great to continue the family business in such a concrete way while also building future-focused recycling solutions in Kurikka,” says Tero Mäkinen. Pramia Plastic has also prioritized its workforce throughout the transition. All employees in Toholampi have received attractive offers to continue working at the new facility in Ilvesjoki. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025, with the plant expected to be operational in
2026.

Up to 80% of Pramia Plastic’s production is exported to the EU area, making it a significant Finnish exporter in the recycling industry.

Pramia Plastic Oy is a pioneer in circular economy

We are a pioneer in circular economy. We turn waste into plastic that can be used as food contact material and is comparable to virgin material. Not one gram of raw material goes to waste during our production process. We manufacture all of our products using 100% domestic recycled material and 100% domestic labor.

Pramia Plastic reuses the material of PET bottles used by the food industry. Our raw material comes from the world’s best recycling system, guaranteeing its high and uniform quality. Our factory is located in Toholampi, and it processes a truckload – one million – of plastic bottles a day. We use them to make plastic straps, flakes and granulates.

Our factory’s plastic strap production line is the most modern in the Nordic countries. We are the largest production plant in Finland powered completely by domestic wind energy. Our parent company Pramia produces part of the wind energy that we use. Our factory, which operates around the clock, has energy-saving LED lights and an environmentally friendly washing process.

TNot one gram of raw material goes to waste during our production process. We send all of our by-products, from the wire used for tying the plastic bottle bales, to other companies for further processing.

We want to act responsibly. For us, responsibility is not just a pretty word, but concrete and everyday actions.
